Why We Love Shooting Film on Wedding Days

Call us photography nerds, but when it comes to film, there’s just something so dreamy about its grain, its timelessness, the aesthetic imperfections and the element of surprise. You never really know what you’re going to get until the film is developed.

There’s a tactile quality that digital simply cannot replicate. Plus, printed film images are out of this world. If you think they look good on a screen, you should see them printed. Film can pick up more resolution in an image, capturing an amount of detail that digital just can’t.

That being said, digital wedding photography has its place. In certain lighting and timing situations, we’ll always turn to digital. But if you love the look and feel of film as much as we do, it could be worth the splurge to add a film package to your wedding day shoot.

When considering film, the lighting and time of the wedding matter. There are different film stocks for different types of lighting, but color film really shines its brightest during the daytime. Shooting with flash on film is fun at night, but flash during a ceremony or other important moments can be distracting.

If you are considering having your photographer shoot film on your wedding day, talk to them about the timing of the day and whether color or black and white film might be the best fit.

With this medium becoming more popular than ever, it is becoming more expensive to purchase and process film, and typically has a longer turnaround time. But all that said, there’s just something about a wedding on film that we just can’t get enough of. What can we say? We’re fans!
