5 tips for a great engagement session

So you found your forever person, and now your engagement session is booked.  We want your engagement session to reflect the love you feel in your hearts.  Here’s our top 5 tips to make the most of it:

      1. How we “pose”, and how we don’t.

We will absolutely guide you through every part of your session.  We will tell you what to do and where to stand, and we will pretty much start off every ‘pose’ for you.  However, sometimes during sessions magic happens and you do sweeter, more authentic things on your own than any specific ‘pose’ that we could’ve ever dreamed up.  When these moments happen, we definitely don’t interfere.  We LOVE walking, running, moving, snuggling, and laughing shots.  We love the crinkle nosed laughs and the wind in your hair type photos.  If things get weird, we will totally step in and move on to something else, but if we are snapping away, it’s because we love what you are doing!  Enjoy each other and everything else will fall into place.

      2.  Treat it like a date.

Your engagement session should feel like a date and we really hope that it’s one of the most fun and romantic dates of your engagement.  Let go of every single image looking perfect and just have fun with each other.  Those magical moments usually happen when you can forget about our cameras and just treat us as friends on a double date. Those fun, quirky, in-between shots are always the best ones anyway.  We want you to look back on these photos for hopefully, the rest of your life, and we want them to make you smile because they allow you to re-live the fun, laughter, and emotion that you share with each other.  Embrace the day, and enjoy this time together.

      3.  What to wear.

We normally say that 1-2 outfits work the best, and your outfit should reflect the location.  We do a lot of moving shots, so wear something that you can move, walk, piggy back ride, sit on the ground, climb a mountain, and be photographed at every angle in.  If you feel like you can’t walk in your shoes, or you can’t move a certain way in that dress, it will show in the pictures.  One outfit can be a dress that you feel confident, and beautiful in, and try keep the second outfit as casual and comfortable as possible (think jeans, pants, shorts, t-shirts, cute tanks, sweaters, flannels, etc.)  If you are stuck on colors, prints, or textures, reach out to me and we can talk about how certain outfits will look in your location.  Again, the number one most important thing is be yourself and be comfortable.

      4.  Where to go.

Your session should be all about you, and the location you choose should reflect you as a couple.  If you love the outdoors, let’s pick a hiking trail to explore together (in this instance, packing as light as possible is best because we will most likely photograph you from place to place).  If you love getting dressed up and being in urban areas, there are so many cool downtown spots nearby.  If you love cooking breakfast things for dinner together and that’s a fun part of your relationship, then let us do something cool in your own house.  One important thing to keep in mind is to not get your heart set on one particular spot in a certain location because if the light is terrible in that spot, it most likely won’t be a great photo.  Light is SO important.  That’s why we like to shoot close to sunrise or sunset when the sun is lower in the sky and the light is golden and even.  Some locations do require a photography fee and an appointment.  If you want an idea of how much it may cost and what appointment policies are, we normally know them in local areas.  We do leave it up to you to make the appointment and pay the photography fees.

      5.  Trust us.

We want to photograph your connection, and the only way for us to do that is for you to let us in a little.  Let us get to know you.  We will probably ask you how you met, how you got engaged, and we may even ask you a few sillier questions, too.  These are all just for fun, so don’t take yourselves too seriously.  If we ask you to do something that seems a little crazy, just trust us- we are probably on to something neat.  We want your photos to be great just as much as you do, and we definitely want this to be a collaboration.  The easiest way to do that is for you to just trust us.  If you have any questions or need some guidance, just reach out.  We promise that we will give you 110%.
